How to Understand Debits and Credits

In bookkeeping under General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), debit and credit refer to type of account and entries to accounts.
Entries to the left side of the an account are debits (DR), and accounts with left sided balances (asset accounts and expense accounts) are debit accounts. Entries to the right side of the an account are credits (CR), and accounts with right sided balances (liability accounts, owners' equity accounts, and revenue and profit accounts) are credit accounts. Understanding debit and credit is essential for bookkeeping and analysis of balance sheets.

Classifieds Wars: Craigslist, Oodle Fight Over Safety

In its latest attempt to challenge Craigslist, Oodle is trying to portray the rival site as a stomping ground for criminals—and Craigslist is not pleased. Oodle put out a report with classifieds research firm AIM Group this morning noting that 330 crimes, including 43 violent ones, were tied to interactions on Craigslist over the last year. Oodle called its rival a “cesspool of crime” and posted an infographic titled “Mayhem On Craigslist” complete with an image of a knife-wielding killer.

Twitter, Tumblr Copycat Sites Gain Popularity in China

As the saying goes, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If that's true, Twitter and Tumblr should be very flattered by the Chinese copycat sites Sina Weibo and DianDian, which have plucked ideas and designs from the microblogging networks. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Sina Weibo has eclipsed Twitter as China's leading microblogging site. Mirae Asset Securities estimates that about 87-percent of the microblogging done by China's 450 million Internet users is with Sina Weibo. Just like "tweet" is now a verb in English, "zhi weibo" is being used as a verb by the Chinese. CEO Charles Chao makes no bones about the inspiration for the site, which also caps users' posts at 140 characters. "We learned much from Twitter," he said. DianDian, on the other hand, didn't really "learn" from Tumblr; it straight-up swiped the site's dashboard layout and color scheme. According to The Next Web Asia, DianDian is currently in private beta testing, and there's no word yet on when it will go public.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the emergence of Twitter and Tumblr's Chinese counterparts will be how these sites censor users' posts, as required by the government. New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof already had his Sina Weibo account deleted for posts referring to the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989, so don't expect a free-speech movement to be born on DianDian, either.

Facebook Upset Over Pedophile Story, Threatens to Sue Daily Mail

Facebook is none too pleased with the way the Daily Mail titled a recent story about a gang of pedophiles in the U.K., and the social network is willing to go to court to settle it.

On Friday, the paper ran a front-page story about a "complex child abuse investigation," involving a group of pedophiles operating out of Devon and more than 20 children who may have been targeted. At the time, it was unclear whether or not the gang used Facebook to coordinate their actions or to find their victims. However, a detective said that parts of the operation "may have occurred on the Internet," and that authorities were "keeping an open mind with regards to Facebook, Bebo and other sites." Nevertheless, the Daily Mail decided to run the story under a headline that read: "How many more victims of Facebook sex gang?"
