Vladimir Putin is throwing his weight behind the free and open-source software movement. The Russian prime minister has apparently signed an order to move the government to an infrastructure built on freely available, open-source software by the third quarter of 2014. The plan would see all major government systems transition to Linux starting in the second quarter of 2012. The move to open-source software will likely save the government money, as well as providing more control to customize its applications. The document, "Transition Plan of the Federal Authorities and Federal Budgetary Institutions to Free Software," doesn't mark the first time that Russian authorities have suggested a move to open source, but previous efforts have stalled due to a lack of political support. But, with Putin signing off on the plan, there is a much better chance that government employees and ministers will move it swiftly into action.
