Take Aim at Santa in 'Mountain Maniac X-Mas'

Mountain Maniac X-Mas
Ah, Christmas. A time of year to come together, rejoice, and slink away from the family to drown yourself in gaming mania. Why should the holidays put a damper on our playing? If anything, this is the perfect time of year to hunker down with a mug of cocoa, a festive sweater, and our picks of great yuletide-themed games.

The 'Mountain Maniac' is at it again, and this time he has Santa in his sights. Following up on PixelJAM's diabolically fun original, 'Mountain Maniac X-Mas' adds a whole lot of Christmas rage to the mix. You control the titular Mountain Maniac on his quest for revenge, which involves wanton destruction with the help of giant boulders. For those who haven't played the original, your goal is to destroy cities and towns using boulders that you knock loose from the top of a mountain. The rocks are dislodged with your hammer by hitting the X key; holding the key will cause your hammer to charge up, thus creating a larger boulder. Once knocked loose, you take control of these rocky projectiles as they fall down the mountain. Somewhat like pinball, your boulder will ricochet around ledges, bounce off springs, and be warped through dark caves during its slow descent. More importantly, however, is that you'll be smashing into an incredible array of unfortunate victims, including elves, snowmobiles and Christmas trees. Knocking into objects allows you to gain "rage" to more accurately steer the boulder using the arrow keys (causing even more destruction). The game's retro graphics and music (composed of warped versions of classic holiday songs), along with a heap of destructive wish fulfillment, all add up to make 'Mountain Maniac X-Mas' a painfully addictive good time.
