New Twitter Record Set on New Year's, With Japan Tweets Ahead of the Pack

japan tweets on new year'sIf there was any doubt about Japan's love of social networking, it's been soundly dashed by the number of tweets the country sent as the clock struck midnight on New Year's Eve. The world sent 6,939 tweets per second (TPS) four seconds after Japan's time zone entered into 2011, with the island nation sending the vast majority of "Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu" ("Happy New Year!") tweets.

The previous record was a measly 3,283 TPS, achieved during Japan's defeat of Denmark in the World Cup last year. According to Twitter, "on New Year's Eve, that all-time TPS record was shattered more than 68 separate times within a single 3-minute period." Hadouken!
