Drama in Real Life: When Emergencies Pile Up

This post is from staff writer Sierra Black. Sierra writes about frugality, sustainable living, and getting her kids to eat kale at Childwild.com. Last week, I mentioned that my cat just died. Not only was his passing heartbreaking, it was expensive. But as I said in that post, I was very happy to be able [...]

Survey: Location Services Have Die-Hard Fans, But Privacy Is A Big Issue

One of the big selling points for consumers deciding to upgrade their feature-phones to smartphones is “location-based services,” like maps that constantly update themselves as you move. A new study commissioned by Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) finds that consumers who are aware of location services are very fond of them, but that they’re also seriously concerned about sharing that information with groups like advertisers—and even with their own social set. Another finding: There’s a fair amount of confusion about what exactly location-based services are, even among some people who say they are users. The study also contained findings about which location services are the most popular, and which demographic groups are the heaviest users of LBS in general.

Caring for Aging Parents

As more of my friends enter middle age, they’re talking less about how to care for their kids and more about how to care for their parents. Our mothers and fathers are nearing (and, in some cases, surpassing) seventy years of age, and not all of them are financially prepared. A GRS reader named Shauna [...]

P Diddy fails to adjust to Britain's time zone

Sean Combs thinks an 11.25 slot on Saturday morning is prime time TV. Someone tell him ?

Lost in Showbiz would like to take you to Twitter and the wellspring of delight that is the feed of Sean "Puffy" Combs, with its riveting mix of plugs for his own brand of vodka, inspirational quotes ? he recently referenced Martin Luther King's "our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter" apparently in the belief that by "things that matter" King was largely referring to Sean "Puffy" Combs's own brand of vodka ? and conversations with God, who, miraculously cured him of the flu after a mere four days of Combs persistently demanding that he do so.

Anyone beset by the creeping sense that Combs lives in a slightly deluded state is unlikely to be much reassured by his account of his recent experiences in the land of British TV: "Just finished filming the Chartshow! Airing Jan 22nd at 11:25am on T4 primetime." Is one of us going to tell him that 11.25 on a Saturday morning doesn't, strictly speaking, constitute "primetime"? Or shall we just leave well alone and pretend Britain comes to a standstill ? "Best of luck, Diddy, you're up against James Martin's Saturday Kitchen, the most important show in the history of British television" etc ? until he goes back to America?
