How A Minor Google Screwup Turned Into A Privacy Freakout

To get a sense of how overheated the debate over online privacy is becoming, consider the trajectory of a conspiracy-minded article published earlier this week in The Huffington Post. Just two days after the publication of Bob Bowdon’s article?which suggests that the true purpose of Google’s “Doodle 4 Google” art program is to build a giant database of kids’ addresses and Social Security numbers?members of Congress were already proposing an actual hearing on the topic.

Thousands of Gmail Users See E-mails Vanish, Accounts Reset

gmail
Thousands of Gmail users suddenly lost access to their inboxes yesterday morning, some claiming that their entire collections of e-mails, Google Chat logs and attachments had simply vanished. Others reported that their accounts had been reset by the bug, which, according to Google, affected as many as 150,000 users. The company says it's investigating the issue, and should resolve it shortly. "Google Mail service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users in the near future," Google confirmed. "Please note this time frame is an estimate and may change." Still have access to your mail but feeling a little worried? DownloadSquad has a guide to backing up your Gmail account to Hotmail or a desktop e-mail accont.

Heather Armstrong Reigns Over Blogdom With Dooce.com

heather armstrongWhen asked what we do for work, we often wince before saying, "I'm a blogger." It's because, for most folks, the term likely describes a twenty-something nerd who lives in his mother's basement, collects unemployment, and writes in his LiveJournal about black metal bands. Thanks to the New York Times' profile of Heather Armstrong, though, "blogger" might soon mean an independently wealthy media personality with a family and a six-bedroom house.

Google Adds Recipes Filter to Search Results

Google introduces Recipes search tab.
Google has introduced a new tab that filters search results to show nothing but recipes. The search results in Recipe View can be refined by ingredient, calorie content and cooking time with the options found on the left side of the page. Each recipe also includes a star rating by users who have tried the dish and photos of the finished product, too. While this new feature does make finding the perfect meal easier, it unfortunately doesn't make cooking said meal any easier for those of us don't know kale from collard greens.

How to Eat Vegetarian At Fast Food Restaurants

The phrase "fast food" tends to conjure up images of hamburgers, fries, hot dogs, or fried chicken. Going out to places like Burger King, McDonald's, or Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) with family or friends may seem like a big challenge if you're a vegetarian. However, if you know what to look for, you may well be surprised that there are lots of options of what you can eat.
Note: This article is based on being a vegetarian in the United States. It can be harder or easier in different countries to find vegetarian fast food options, depending on factors such as strength of the vegetarian movement or willingness to cater to vegetarians. And while this article has some tips for vegans, it will be harder for a vegan to find fast food options due to the greater food restrictions.

Game Literally Makes You Go, 'Pew Pew'

'PewPewPewPewPewPewPewPewPew' is a 2-D side-scrolling blaster game that should seem familiar to anyone who lived through the 8-bit and 16-bit eras. This soon-to-be Xbox Live title is a little different though; instead of using a controller, two players man microphones, one controlling thrust by blowing and the other firing lasers by -- you guessed it -- going "pew, pew, pew."

Get Al Jazeera on Your TV, Even if Your Cable Provider Doesn't Carry It

Al Jazeera
Al Jazeera has been one of the best sources of news coming out of the Middle East lately. The problem for news junkies like us is that cable and satellite companies in the U.S. don't carry it. You can watch it as a live stream on your PC, but who wants to squint at a 15-inch laptop screen when you've got a nice, 42-inch TV sitting in your living room? Thankfully, there are a few ways to get Al Jazeera English on your TV -- without launching an intense letter-writing campain to your local cable company. (But maybe you should?) Eric Spiegelman at The Awl breaks down how to use a Roku or a Google TV device to watch on your HD set. The Google TV method should work for the Boxee Box as well. Unfortunately, Apple TV users are left out in the cold. Even though Al Jazeera is available on YouTube, Apple TV's YouTube app doesn't support live streams. Jerks.

Celebrity names swamp News of the World phone-hacking inquiry

Scotland Yard listening to 'hundreds of intercepts' following a surge in legal actions and parallel claims

So many messages are being examined by Scotland Yard's phone-hacking inquiry that it is difficult to identify every mention of a celebrity's name among "hundreds of intercepts", lawyers for the police have claimed.

The proliferation of legal actions generated by complaints against the News of the World is also in danger of congesting the courts with "parallel claims", the judge hearing applications for disclosure in three cases has implied.

Official recognition of the scale of the problem came as three more alleged victims of the practice of hacking into voicemail messages sought high court orders granting them access to documents that may substantiate claims for damages. Lawyers for Paul Gascoigne, George Galloway and Mick McGuire, former deputy chief executive of the Professional Footballers' Association, were granted permission to see relevant sections of transcripts.

The notebooks are among material seized by the Metropolitan police from the convicted private investigator Glenn Mulcaire who was employed by the newspaper.

Gascoigne and McGuire's applications were supported by Newsgroup Newspapers, owners of the News of the World, because, the court heard, the company "wishes to show it was not involved in the interception of information" relating to them.

Explaining the need for efficient case management, Mr Justice Vos told the court: "There have been numerous parallel applications with different counsel and solicitors ... raising identical or nearly identical points". He wanted to avoid duplication, he said.

At least 14 cases were already before the courts, agreed Jeremy Reed, counsel for Gascoigne and McGuire. There is speculation there will be many more, he added.

Lawyers for Gascoigne requested that any intercepted messages "about him or concerning him" should be included in the disclosure order because private information about his medical treatment had been obtained by hacking into other people's phones.

Edwin Buckett, representing the Met, said that would mean the police "having to listen to every transcript to see if Mr Gascoigne is mentioned". There are "hundreds of intercepts", he said. "It makes it so wide, it's difficult to comply with."

The judge ordered the police to hand over anything in the transcripts that was "about or concerning" Paul Gascoigne.

The names of more journalists may appear after the judge ordered that ''redactions'' ? the blanked-out sections in the transcripts handed to the claimants ? should not hide the names of employees of the News of the World.

The three claimants were also granted access to information on breaches of privacy gathered by the Information Commissioner's Office during its Operation Motorman inquiry into the matter.

Scotland Yard has confirmed that 45 detectives are now working on Operation Weeting, the reopened investigation into phone hacking launched following the sacking by the News of the World of one of its senior executives.

Previously officers had informed only a handful of people that they had been targeted by Mulcaire.

The private detective was jailed for six months for hacking into the private telephone calls of members of the royal household. The NoW reporter Clive Goodman was also jailed for four months after he pleaded guilty to phone message interception charges in January 2007.

The Guardian has revealed in the past that the seized material included 4,332 names or partial names; 2,987 mobile phone numbers; 30 audiotapes of varying length; and 91 pin codes of a kind needed to access voicemail with the minority of targets who change the factory settings on their mobile phones.

Hacked and Hijacked! How to Save Data if Your Portable Device Is Stolen

Symptom:

You reach into your pocket or bag, and, well, it's empty!

Diagnosis:

Beyond the understandable distress of losing a pricey smartphone, laptop or tablet PC, the real trauma is the sudden and unfettered access afforded to the slippery-fingered jerk who took it. The cost of a new laptop is meager compared to the personal and even financial havoc that a motivated thief can wreak with the data stored on a typical portable device.

How to Herd Cattle

Herding cattle is an art and a science that requires patience, knowledge of flight-zone, and a bit of bovine psychology. Herding cattle is as old as Time itself, as old as when the first cattle where domesticated over 50,000 years ago, and as old as the cattle drives done in the Old West.
Herding is a method done by herding dogs and/or humans to move a herd of cattle from one area to another, either from a grazed area to a fresh pasture, or from the pasture to the handling facilities where cattle are run through the race and crush to be vaccinated, dewormed, dehorned, tagged, etc. before being let out to the pasture again.

George Clooney says his past prevents him being a politician | Open thread

Would your private life stand the test of a public airing if you stood for office? Has the idea of 'skeletons in the closet' altered?

George Clooney has declared his debauched personal history would prevent him from ever entering conventional politics.

In an interview with Newsweek he said: "I didn't live my life in the right way for politics, you know ? I fucked too many chicks and did too many drugs and that's the truth." Making it clear he would not be following in the footsteps of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ronald Reagan, Clooney added if he were to stand for election his campaign slogan would be frank: "I drank the bong water."

Assuming you've never stood for office yourself, what is it that's held you back? Would youthful indiscretions make it impossible for you to project the right image? Do you think that our political system is slowly adjusting to a new reality in which old notions of 'skeletons in the closet' are less relevant? Our own PM has, after all admitted to smoking cannabis at Eton, although flatly denies he attended this acid house rave in 1988.

Apple Unveils New MacBook Pro Line With Thunderbolt, FaceTime HD

apple macbook pro
Rumors of a MacBook Pro update from Apple have been floating around for the past few weeks, so it was no surprise to see this morning's launch of a fully refreshed line (including 13-inch, 15-inch and 17-inch versions). The Pros are packing the cutting-edge Intel Sandy Bridge Core i5 and i7 processors, AMD Radeon graphics cards and the brand new Thunderbolt I/O tech. Like a supercharged USB or Firewire, Thunderbolt I/O clocks in at 20 times faster than USB 2.0. With support for both peripherals and displays, Thunderbolt lets you hook into hard drives, audio devices and even your home theater (via HDMI connectors). And, for chronic video chatters, FaceTime is now available in an HD version. The 13-inch models start at $1,499, 15-inch at $1,799 and 17-inch at $2,499.

Oodle Says Craigslist Is a 'Cesspool of Crime,' Craigslist Explains What Oodle Is

oodle's 'mayhem on craigslist' graphic
There's a nasty war of words brewing between Craigslist and Oodle, a rival classified ads site. Yesterday, Oodle posted a report claiming that last year, 330 crimes (including 43 violent crimes) were connected to Craigslist, which the company described as a "cesspool of crime." The report, which Oodle put together with research firm AIM Group, also featured an infographic titled 'Mayhem on Craigslist,' along with an image of an assassin holding a knife.

Not surprisingly, Craigslist is pretty irritated by Oodle's characterization. In a retaliatory blog post, Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster deemed the report a "false (and defamatory) paid-for editorial," noting that 300 crimes is only a small part of the "BILLIONS [sic] of human interactions" that his site facilitates every day. Buckmaster also took the opportunity to take a swipe at Oodle, which he explained in great detail "since few have heard of it."

Bicycle computer maker Velocomp launches iPhone telemetry solution

By Tim Conneally, Betanews

iBike Dash CC

Florida-based sports tech company Velocomp on Tuesday launched an iOS telemetry solution for cyclists called iBike Dash Cycling Computer. The solution is, in effect, a software version of the company's dedicated bike computers called iBike Power.

It consists of a bicycle mount for an iPhone or iPod Touch, a wireless speed sensor, and an associated software application that gauges speed, heartrate, windspeed, trip distance and time, elevation, and power, and includes programmable workouts, and turn-by-turn navigation.

iBike app screenshot

iBike works with ANT+ wireless sensors, a proprietary low-power wireless technology that operates in the unlicensed 2.4GHz ISM band. This technology is used by a number of comanies such as Adidas, Garmin, and Timex, so there are a number of compatible sensors that can be added to iBike, like heartrate, cadence, and power sensors.

Using these different sensors and the iBike app, users can build a rather powerful bike computer. Velocomp today says the app has 50 workouts based upon user power and heart rate, and includes a calendar feature that keeps track of weekly statistics such as caloric expenditure, miles traveled, and average speed. iBike app

The advantage of this iPhone solution is that it is vastly cheaper than the company's standalone product. The standalone units range from $239 all the way up to $759, but the iOS ones cost $199 and $329, depending upon the accessories the user picks.

iBike Phone Booth

What's more interesting, though, is that the iOS app is free, and if you feel like building your own bike mount, you can hook it up to any ANT+ compatible sensors, and fashion something even cheaper.

Inside Intel's Thunderbolt: the next generation of connectivity

By Ed Oswald, Betanews

Somewhat hidden in between Apple's announcement Thursday of new MacBook Pro laptops was the debut of a new method of PC connectivity: Thunderbolt. It can be most easily explained as the next generation of FireWire, allowing for transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps.

Those who stand to benefit the most from Thunderbolt would be those in the audio-visual industries, which Intel itself bills the technology as perfect for. "Working with HD media is one of the most demanding things people do with their PCs," Intel's PC Client Group general manager Mooly Eden said. "We've taken the vision of simple, fast transfer of content between PCs and devices, and made it a reality."

This is some 12 times faster than FireWire 800, and 20 times faster than USB 2.0. A technical collaboration between Apple and Intel, the technology would also allow for the combination of high-speed data and HD video on a single cable.

Intel and Apple actually did not need to create anything new in order to bring Thunderbolt to market: instead, two preexisting technologies have been combined. PCI Express, a high speed serial interface would handle the data side, while DisplayPort handles the HD video.

Instead of creating a new port for devices, Thunderbolt-enabled peripherals would be connected through existing Mini DisplayPort connectors. Intel says Thunderbolt is compatible with current DisplayPort displays and adapters, and multiple devices can be daisy-chained to the same port, in Apple's case up to six.

This type of usage may be most beneficial to mobile users, who would be able to expand their computers data and display capabilities with a single connection, which could also help control cable clutter. Thunderbolt-compatible peripherals are expected to begin hitting the market throughout this year.

While Intel is pushing Thunderbolt, USB 3.0 still remains on the horizon. Some analysts speculate that the chipmaker may have held off on implementing the technology to give Thunderbolt a chance. In any case, it appears the two technologies may square off in the not too distant future.

This has already happened once, and in a similar pattern. Apple also backed FireWire in its infancy: the cost and the rather scarce availability of peripherals allowed USB 2.0 to eventually become the de-facto next generation standard.

Study: Cell Phones Can Speed Up Brain Activity, Long-Term Effects Remain Unclear

human brainA new study from the National Institutes of Health suggests that using cell phones can change the way our brains behave, though it remains unclear whether these changes can be harmful.

The study, published yesterday in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that just 50 minutes of cell phone use can noticeably speed up brain activity in the region closest to the phone's antenna. While overall brain metabolism didn't change when exposed to wireless radiation, activity in the area next to the antenna spiked by 7-percent. Dr. Nora Volkow, who led the study, told Reuters that the findings are significant because they demonstrate that even weak radiation from cell phones can alter the brain's metabolism. But she added that it's still too early to tell whether or not cell phones pose a tangible neurological risk, emphasizing that the results do "not in any way indicate that" cell phones can cause cancer.

Slipping in over his VNC client, Max could see what was on the computer's screen, as though standing right in front of it. Since he worked at night, the display on the dormant PC was usually dark, so he'd nudge his mouse to clear the screen saver. If there was anyone in the room, it might have been a little spooky: remember that time your computer monitor flipped on for no reason, and the cursor twitched? It might have been Max Vision taking a quick look at your screen.
Former hacker and Wired's Threat Level blog editor Kevin Poulsen has a new book out today, detailing the story of Max Vision, "a white hat computer hacker who turned to the dark side." This excerpt from 'Kingpin -- How One Hacker Took Over the Billion Dollar Cyber Crime Underground' gives a glimpse into a pulpy narrative straight out of Hollywood, but it's true stuff.

How to Understand Debits and Credits

In bookkeeping under General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), debit and credit refer to type of account and entries to accounts.
Entries to the left side of the an account are debits (DR), and accounts with left sided balances (asset accounts and expense accounts) are debit accounts. Entries to the right side of the an account are credits (CR), and accounts with right sided balances (liability accounts, owners' equity accounts, and revenue and profit accounts) are credit accounts. Understanding debit and credit is essential for bookkeeping and analysis of balance sheets.

Twitter, Tumblr Copycat Sites Gain Popularity in China

Twitter and Tumblr clones in China.
As the saying goes, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If that's true, Twitter and Tumblr should be very flattered by the Chinese copycat sites Sina Weibo and DianDian, which have plucked ideas and designs from the microblogging networks. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Sina Weibo has eclipsed Twitter as China's leading microblogging site. Mirae Asset Securities estimates that about 87-percent of the microblogging done by China's 450 million Internet users is with Sina Weibo. Just like "tweet" is now a verb in English, "zhi weibo" is being used as a verb by the Chinese. CEO Charles Chao makes no bones about the inspiration for the site, which also caps users' posts at 140 characters. "We learned much from Twitter," he said. DianDian, on the other hand, didn't really "learn" from Tumblr; it straight-up swiped the site's dashboard layout and color scheme. According to The Next Web Asia, DianDian is currently in private beta testing, and there's no word yet on when it will go public.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the emergence of Twitter and Tumblr's Chinese counterparts will be how these sites censor users' posts, as required by the government.
