Play the Tough Cop in 'By the Numbers' Interrogation Game

'by the numbers'
One room -- that's all. This week's gaming picks limit you to the claustrophobic confines of four-walled spaces, but don't shy away from these enclosed experiences. Although being stuck in one room may seem limiting, it's the perfect setting for some quick, bite-sized gaming to get you through your lunch break.

'By The Numbers' is all about talking -- less of the heart-to-heart variety, though, and more of the kind that involves repeated threats of grievous physical harm. The game centers on the interrogation of a witness to a kidnapping by a loose-cannon cop. Through a series of dialogue choices, you must whittle away the suspect's reserve, and catch any incriminating statements in order to deduce the location of a kidnapped girl. While the game is essentially a glorified cut scene, replete with every stereotypical bad cop cliche, it serves as a showcase for fluidly animated, retro graphics. Created with motion-captured vector graphics, each character's face evokes a great deal of nuance without any creepy uncanny-valley effect. It's quite impressive to watch, especially considering the game was completed within a week. We'd love to see a revamped version with a more intensive interrogation system, but 'By The Numbers' is still another testament to the creativity of indie game design. If you want to take a crack at being a tough guy cop for half an hour, then download this PC-only game immediately.
